Best Camping Spots in Qatar 2026: Starry Nights, Family Beaches and Quiet Coves

Some of Qatar's best evenings happen far from the city lights. You might be lying on cool sand at Sealine counting shooting stars, watching the kids splash in the knee-deep water at Al Wakrah, or sitting under the cliffs at Zekreet with nobody else in sight. With the winter camping season running from 25 October 2026 to 20 April 2027, now is the time to choose where you'll spend your weekends.

This guide groups the best camping spots in Qatar by what you want from your weekend, so you can find the top camping locations for your crew in minutes. There are dark-sky spots for stargazing, family beaches with playgrounds and shade, quiet coves for a private escape, and easy-access shores you can reach without a 4x4. We've also included a new-moon calendar for the season and the camping rules to know before you leave Doha.

Quick answer: Top camping spots in Qatar for 2026–27 - Best for stargazing: Khor Al Adaid (the Inland Sea), the southern dunes beyond Sealine, and Zekreet on the west coast - Best family beaches: Al Wakrah Family Beach, Al Farkiya Beach, Simaisma and Al Qamra Beach Garden, and Katara Beach - Best for privacy: Fuwairit, Zekreet, Al Maroona (French Beach) and Dukhan - Easiest to reach (no 4x4): Al Wakrah, Katara, 974 Beach, Simaisma, Al Farkiya and the Sealine beach strip

How to Choose the Right Camping Spot in Qatar

The right spot depends on four things: who's coming, how dark you want it, what you can drive, and how many facilities you need.

Families with small children usually want shallow water, shade, toilets and a short drive, so the managed family beaches near Doha are the easy choice. Stargazers want the opposite: no lights, no crowds and a clear horizon. That usually means a longer drive and sometimes a 4x4.

Facilities are the other big difference. Places like Al Wakrah and Katara have washrooms and food nearby. Fuwairit, Zekreet and the Inland Sea have almost nothing, so you carry in everything you need and carry out everything you bring. Our camping essentials checklist covers what to pack for each type of trip.

Top Camping Locations in Qatar for Starry Nights

The best places for stargazing in Qatar are Khor Al Adaid (the Inland Sea), the dunes beyond Sealine, Zekreet on the west coast, Al Kharrara and the northern desert past Al Khor. Stargazing in Qatar is best from November to March, when nights are cooler and the air is clearer. Give your eyes 20–30 minutes in the dark to adjust, and use a red light instead of a white one so you don't lose your night vision.

1. Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea)

Khor Al Adaid, also written Khor Al Udeid, is where tall dunes meet a calm inlet of the sea in the far south of Qatar. It's a protected natural reserve. The high dunes block stray light from the horizon, and the still water reflects the night sky, which makes it one of the darkest and most dramatic places in the country to see the stars.

Getting there: You need a 4x4 and real dune-driving experience. If it's your first visit, book a guided desert tour. Check the tide times before you set up close to the water.

2. Sealine and the Southern Dunes

Sealine, near Mesaieed, is about 45 minutes to an hour south of Doha and can be reached on a paved road. It's the most popular camping area in Qatar: soft white sand, calm water, a supermarket nearby, and camel rides and dune buggies at weekends.

Stargazing tip: The beach strip is busy and bright on weekends. For darker skies, drive (by 4x4) a little further into the dunes, away from the resorts and quad-bike zones.

3. Zekreet and the Film City Area

On the west coast, roughly an hour and a half (about 100 km) from Doha, Zekreet faces away from the city glow. It has some of the darkest western skies in Qatar. Wind-carved limestone "mushroom" rocks and the nearby steel sculptures by artist Richard Serra make a striking foreground for night photos.

4. Al Kharrara (Jaww Al Banat)

South-west of Doha, Al Kharrara is a favourite with weekend campers. Once you're past the busy entry areas, it opens into wide, flat desert that gives you a full view of the sky.

5. The Northern Desert (Beyond Al Khor towards Al Ruwais)

North of Al Khor, the rural desert is quiet, far from crowds and dark enough for good viewing. It's a good choice if you live in the north of Doha or want a calmer alternative to the southern dunes.

New-Moon Calendar for Stargazing in Qatar (2026–27)

The darkest nights fall around the new moon, when there's no moonlight to wash out the fainter stars. Plan your stargazing trips for a night or two either side of these dates (Qatar time):

MonthNew moon
November 2026Monday 9 November
December 2026Wednesday 9 December
January 2027Thursday 7 January (late evening)
February 2027Saturday 6 February
March 2027Monday 8 March

Best Family Beaches in Qatar

The best family beaches in Qatar are Al Wakrah Family Beach, Al Farkiya Beach, Simaisma with Al Qamra Beach Garden, and Katara Beach. All four can be reached by car without a 4x4 and have shade or facilities. Several public beaches are set aside for families (and women), so check the signs at the entrance, because designations can change.

1. Al Wakrah Family Beach

About 20–25 minutes south of central Doha, next to Al Wakrah Souq, this is the easiest family beach day in Qatar. Entry is free. There's plenty of parking, plus playgrounds, BBQ zones with gazebos, washrooms and snack points. The water stays very shallow for a long way out, which is ideal for toddlers. It gets busy on cool-season weekends, so arrive early.

2. Al Farkiya (Al Farkiah) Beach

About 54 km north of Doha near Al Khor, Al Farkiya is a fenced beach with controlled entry. That makes it one of the safest choices for young children. It has shaded seating, barbecue areas, playgrounds, toilets, showers and green gardens. There are no restaurants, so bring your own food and drinks.

3. Simaisma Beach and Al Qamra Beach Garden

Simaisma has soft sand and shallow water. Part of the beach is reserved for women, which many families appreciate. A few minutes away, Al Qamra Beach Garden adds lawns, walking paths, picnic areas and children's play zones, so a beach morning can easily turn into a park afternoon.

4. Katara Beach

If you want a full-service day in the city, Katara Beach inside Katara Cultural Village is a paid, managed beach. It has lifeguards, changing rooms, sunbed rental, cafés and water sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding. Check Katara's official channels for entry fees and any family-only days.

5. Umm Bab (Palm Tree Beach)

On the west coast, Umm Bab is popular with families on winter weekends. It has a children's play zone, BBQ grills and shaded picnic spots. The strange, moon-like landscape of the old clay quarry inland makes the drive part of the adventure.

Our Top Picks for a Family Beach Day

Quiet and Private Beaches for Getting Away

If you want space and silence more than playgrounds, head for one of these quieter shores. They have few or no facilities, so pack everything, including shade, water, food and a way to change in private.

  • Fuwairit Beach: about 100 km north of Doha, with calm, shallow water, white sand and rock formations. The closest shop is at least a 15-minute drive away. Parts of the beach close from April to July to protect nesting hawksbill turtles, so plan your visit for earlier in the season.
  • Zekreet Beach: limestone cliffs, small bays and turquoise water on the Dukhan peninsula. It's one of the most photogenic and least developed coastlines in Qatar.
  • Al Maroona (French Beach): a quiet northern beach with minimal facilities. Al Maroona is also one of the MoECC's coastal camping areas this season.
  • Dukhan Beach: about 90 km west, with clear water and smooth sand. There are places to eat in the nearby town.
  • Al Ghariya Beach: a calm northern beach that has been designated for families and women.

Easy-Access Beaches in Qatar (No 4x4 Needed)

Not everyone has a 4x4 or wants to drive on sand. These beaches can be reached on paved roads, with parking close to the shore:

  • Al Wakrah Family Beach: free entry, parking, shallow water
  • Katara Beach: in the city, managed, with lifeguards
  • 974 Beach (Ras Abu Aboud): changing rooms, showers and cafés near Stadium 974
  • West Bay and Lusail beaches: walking paths and cafés right in the city
  • Simaisma and Al Qamra Beach Garden: lawns and paths next to the sand
  • Al Farkiya Beach: fenced, with shaded seating and toilets
  • Sealine (beach strip): reachable on tarmac; you only need a 4x4 for the dunes beyond

Visiting with a wheelchair, stroller or limited mobility? Facilities vary from beach to beach and change over time. Call ahead or check the Ministry of Municipality's channels to confirm access paths and accessible toilets before you go.

Camping Rules by MoECC in Qatar to Know Before You Go (2026–27)

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has set these rules for the 2026–27 season:

  1. Camp only at an approved site, the one named on your permit. Don't move your camp without approval.
  2. Keep at least 5 metres between tents.
  3. Keep gas cylinders outside tents, and set up your kitchen apart from sleeping tents.
  4. Use dim, energy-efficient lighting that points only where it's needed, to reduce light pollution.
  5. Motorcycles are restricted. They're banned in rawdat (green meadow) areas and in camping areas from 10 pm to 5 am.
  6. Leave no trace. Use designated bins and follow approved procedures for waste and wastewater.

Seasonal camps (Commercial Camps) need a permit and a QAR 10,000 refundable deposit, booked through the MoECC website or the Bee'ah app.
